A prompt is a brief: container, content and polish

When an AI tool can make almost anything, what separates a good result from a poor one is logic and communication. A prompt is a brief, and writing one is the same skill as directing a crew. In our workshops we say it this way: AI is the crew, and you are the leader.

This is the method we teach in hands-on sessions.

Don't write alone

Start with a conversation, not a blank box.

  1. Discuss. Brainstorm the idea with a reasoning model first.
  2. Extract. Ask it to write the technical prompt for you.
  3. Refine. Read the draft and ask whether it matches your vision. Edit it by hand.

Prompting is a dialogue plus a logic check.

Three ingredients

Every good prompt needs three elements, in any order:

  • Container: the format you want. A close-up photograph, a vertical video, a landing page, a storyboard.
  • Content: the subject, the action, or for an app, its features.
  • Polish: the finish. Cinematic lighting, a dark-mode interface, film grain.

Mix them as needed. The point is to check that all three are present, and that each one fits the others.

Debug by reading literally

If a result fails, read your prompt literally, as if you were the tool. Ask whether you described something that does not fit the container. For example, if you describe a pair of shoes (content) but ask for a close-up of a face (container), the tool has been given two conflicting briefs. Do not describe what does not fit.

Stay flexible about tools

Tools change every few weeks. The method does not. Be tool agnostic: learn to be flexible and focus on what you want to make. A team that understands container, content and polish can pick up a new image, video or app-building tool quickly.

Practise it with a team

This method is the core of our hands-on AI workshops. Teams practise it on a real brand brief, with facilitators beside them, until the habit sticks. For the full session outline, read how to run an AI workshop for a marketing team.
